Google is making in roads (or at least trying to) on its way to the top social networking platform with its plus product. Although we are still some time away from seeing that, if that ever happens, but the search giant isn't in mood to leave any stone unturned here. In its latest effort, Google has completed a deal where it has reportedly bought Meebo for about a $100Mn. The news was posted on Meebo' blog yesterday, for what made of an official announcement from their side.
Founded in 2005, Meebo is a Silicon Valley start-up that works with publishers and advertisers to connect them with web users. The company raised $70Mn in venture capital since it started. With built in adverts Meebo allows for easy chat and social sharing. Their chat toolbar allows for easy link sharing and most importantly advertising, which is what(read Adwords) Google seems to make most of the money from. The service is also available as an app. Meebo initially started with browser based instant messaging program supporting multiple messaging services like for instance Facebook. The then launched Meebo bar, something that they call their flagship product. The bar allows users to chat with their network on quite a few websites like TV guide, TMZ etc while also allowing advertisers to display to display content at the bottom of the web pages.
The move as Google puts it is an effort to boost their goal of letting the users share content and stay connected just like their usual life, making it more simpler and easier in the process. It however is pretty clear that the search giant is looking to boost the presence of their social network Google plus with the acquisitions like these. This is what they had to say in a statement:
We are always looking for better ways to help users share content and connect with others across the Web, just as they do in real life. With the Meebo team's expertise in social publisher tools, we believe they will be a great fit with the Google Plus team

For more than seven years we’ve been helping publishers find deeper
relationships with their users and to make their sites more social and
engaging. Together with Google, we’re super jazzed to roll up our
sleeves and get cracking on even bigger and better ways to help users
and website owners alike.
We’ve had a blast building Meebo so far and we’re really excited to start the next leg of our journey.
